Professionals can learn of LGBT issues at conference

Columbus-"Creating and Sustaining LGBT-Affirming Services" is the focus of the seventh annual A Matter of Pride Conference organized by Amethyst, Inc./Women's Outreach for Women, the Buckeye Region Anti-Violence Organization, the Columbus Health Department, and Stonewall Columbus.

The conference is offered each year to educate mental health, substance abuse, and social service providers and consumers about the issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.

"All service providers will encounter LGBT clients, and since culturally diverse and effective services are greatly needed, education on these issues is crucial," said Women's Outreach for Women program director Amy Crawford, the conference coordinator. "In addition, we want to provide consumers with resources and information on the services available to them," she said.

Kim Murillo, the executive director of Stonewall Recovery Services for Sexual Minorities in Seattle, Washington, will present the keynote address entitled "Effec-

"Our congregation is delighted to make our space, our pipe organ, and our new grand piano available as part of the celebration of Pride month," said Richard Shirey, organist and choirmaster at the Church of Our Saviour. The church is known in the Akron area for its openness to diverse membership and its support of the GLBT community.

Pride ArtsFest is part of the outreach programming of the Akron Area Pride Center. There is no admission charge to attend the evening's activities, however, a freewill offering in support of the center will be received.

"The performing and fine artists in our community are frequently isolated from each other," she said. "We want them to have an opportunity to meet and, frankly, AAPC hopes that the synergy of their being together will result in some new arts endeavors which would be great for all of us."

Schwitzgebel added, “I can dream of a Pride ArtsFest in coming years which would last all weekend and would include classes, workshops and seminars of interest to the artists themselves and to folks who are 'artistically challenged' like myself.”
